NHK reported at noon that the Cabinet approved today this year’s White Paper on International Economy and Trade, which points out that nations around the world are boosting efforts to achieve economic security, including securing supplies of critical items such as semiconductors, and managing advanced technology that could be used for military purposes, amid the fierce competition between the United States and China. The white paper reportedly says Japan needs to diversify its suppliers of semiconductors and key resources such as rare earths and swiftly build a global supply chain in close cooperation with the United States and other partners. It also reportedly says Japan should promote domestic research and development of advanced technologies to gain a competitive advantage.
According to the network, the white paper also stresses the importance of promoting rulemaking in close cooperation with the United States and Europe toward realizing carbon neutrality by 2050 and implementing industrial policies under which decarbonization will lead to economic growth. It also calls for raising awareness of forced labor and child labor.
