NRA to require nuclear waste be buried “70 meters below ground”

On June 30, the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) approved a proposed revision to the regulatory standard that stipulates the final disposal method to be used for highly radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. The NRA requires that  in-furnace structures, control rods (which regulate the fission reaction), and other waste generated in the decommissioning process of nuclear power plants are buried more than 70 meters below ground so that they are not to impacted by earthquakes or volcanos. The waste is to be monitored for 300 to 400 years. (Abridged)
