South Korea eager to reduce reliance on Japan for key materials

Saturday’s Nikkei and Asahi highlighted the second anniversary on Friday of Japan’s decision to tighten restrictions on Korea-bound strategic materials, noting that according to the ROK government, the country’s dependence on Japan for 100 core products has dropped by 6.5% over the past two years. While noting, however, that its trade deficit with Japan has increased during the same period, the dailies added that it appears difficult for the South Korean industrial sector to achieve the Moon administration’s goal of “breaking away” from Japan.
