Yomiuri wrote from Hong Kong that a Chinese expert on soil science stated during a speech at an academic forum in Guangzhou on April 27 that vegetables and meat from Fukushima have been confirmed safe through radiation testing following decontamination efforts by Japan. However, the Guangzhou branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the organizer of the event, removed the video of his speech from its website and offered an apology on July 7 in response to a barrage of criticism from Chinese netizens. Some of them said the scholar should not have promoted the safety of Fukushima food. The organizer said the speech included inappropriate content and apologized for any potential negative impact from viewing the video. The paper wrote that the Chinese government suspended imports of food from Fukushima Prefecture and some other areas following the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011 and has maintained the restrictions on imports from most of these areas for more than ten years. According to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, five nations and regions in addition to China have been maintaining import restrictions on farm products from several areas in Japan.
