Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that concerning Tuesday’s incident in which a container fell off a Futenma-based CH-53E helicopter and landed in waters off Tonaki Island, which is located west of the main island of Okinawa, the U.S. Marines in Okinawa said on Wednesday that the container landed in waters that are outside the area designated for U.S. military operations. According to the Marines, the aircraft was transporting the container from Irisuna Island, which is located four kilometers from Tonaki and used as a training site for the Marines, to Torii Station in Yomitan on the main island of Okinawa. The Marines said the helicopter did not drop the container intentionally and they are investigating the cause of the accident.

In a related report, Okinawa Times wrote that Governor Tamaki told reporters on Wednesday that he will file a protest over the incident because it could have caused serious damage.
