All national dailies wrote that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on Thursday that 1,308 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Tokyo on Thursday, the highest number since January 21 and topping 1,000 for the second day in a row. The seven-day rolling average of infections was 882.1 per day, up 32.9% from the previous week. A Tokyo Metropolitan Government panel of experts on the COVID-19 pandemic warned on Thursday that the daily average of new cases could exceed 2,400 in Tokyo on Aug. 11, higher than the peak of the third wave in January, attributing the current spike to the highly infectious Delta variant. The panel advising the Tokyo Metropolitan Government also raised concerns about a crisis in the medical care system now that the number of hospitalized patients has exceeded 2,000.
