The regional Kanagawa Shimbun reported online that the prefectural government is considering asking the central government to place the prefecture under a state of emergency due to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus. The number of new cases was 403 on Thursday, exceeding 400 for the first time in almost six months. The authorities are reportedly alarmed by the looming possibility of a sudden spike in infections on account of the Delta variant.
According to the regional Chiba Nippo, the Chiba prefectural government is also inclined to call for the GOJ to reimpose a state of emergency for the prefecture, quoting Governor Kumagai as saying this morning: “We need to consider it as an option. We may have no choice but to ask for it if infections spread further.”
