Federation of Electric Power Companies Chairperson Ikebe Kazuhiro (President of Kyushu Electric) held an online press conference on July 16 during which he expressed his view that nuclear power does not compare unfavorably to solar power in terms of power generation costs. Ikebe said that “nuclear power is not inferior to other power sources” in response to an estimate by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) showing that solar power—not nuclear power—will be the power source with the lowest power generation cost in 2030.

Ikebe pointed out that METI’s figures were based on rote calculations for certain conditions. Ikebe claimed that “it is necessary to evaluate the power system as a whole.” He also called for a review of the system that sets the operating period of nuclear power plants at 40 years, saying that each facility should be evaluated individually to determine if their equipment has deteriorated.
