All national papers focused on Health Minister Tamura’s announcement last night that his ministry has sealed a contract with Moderna to secure 50 million additional doses of its COVID-19 vaccine early next year. The minister said the additional supplies will perhaps be used as “booster shots” in view of the rapid spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant.

In a related development, the business daily wrote that the GOJ has concluded that it will not be able to provide certain local authorities, including the prefectural governments of Saitama, Hokkaido, and Tokushima, with the Moderna vaccine in early August on account of a supply shortage.
