NHK gave top coverage to Typhoon Nepartak, which made landfall in Miyagi Prefecture early this morning. NTV led with the spike in new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo to a record high of 2,848 on Tuesday. All other commercial networks led with reports on Team Japan’s victory over Team USA in women’s softball in the Olympics, allowing Japan to retain the Olympic softball championship.

Team Japan’s Olympic gold medal in women’s softball and the COVID-19 resurgence in the Tokyo metropolitan area were the two dominant items on the front pages of all national papers, except Nikkei, which gave top play to the Health Ministry’s plan to raise premiums for employment insurance.
