JAEA resumes operation of next-generation nuclear reactor

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) resumed the operation of the “High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor” (HTTR) in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, on July 30. The HTTR is a next-generation nuclear reactor known as a “high-temperature gas reactor.” With an eye to achieving a carbon-neutral society, the JAEA is conducting the research and development necessary for hydrogen production using the high-temperature gas generated during the operation of the HTTR. The HTTR was operated for the first time since January 2011.
