The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) announced on July 28 that it has launched a new system to hire outside talent as “special advisors on digital issues.” The advisors will cooperate in JFTC surveys to identify issues in market competition and share information on artificial intelligence (AI) and market trends in Big Tech’s digital advertising.

At a press conference on July 28, JFTC Secretary General Sugahisa Shuichi said that the JFTC aims to “effectively promote market competition by utilizing the latest digital technology.” The JFTC authorized four digital technology specialists from the private sector and research institutions as JFTC special advisors.

The advisers will give counsel based on their expertise in such areas as AI, the 5G telecommunications standard, Big Tech’s digital advertising, and the protection of personal information. Their terms expire at the end of fiscal 2021.

With an eye to enhancing its monitoring of the digital market, the JFTC expects to turn to outside talent for areas JFTC staff cannot cover.

The JFTC will also request the special advisors’ cooperation in preparing questionnaires for companies and users as well as analyzing survey results.
