Suga touts significance of Tokyo games amid pandmeic

Tokyo, Aug. 4 (Jiji Press)–Meeting with visiting Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid on Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga stressed the significance of holding the Tokyo Olympic Games amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

 

According to officials with access to the meeting at the prime minister’s office, Suga said the Games “show to the world that humanity is overcoming difficulties through effort and wisdom.”

 

Kaljulaid applauded Japan for holding a wonderful event under the difficult circumstances.

 

The officials also said the two leaders agreed to cooperate in achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific and resolving issues related to North Korea including the abduction of Japanese citizens.

 

Suga further sought Kaljulaid’s role in lifting the European Union’s import restrictions on Japanese food products.
