Upper House member Hayashi to resign as early as Aug. 16 to run in Lower House election

Former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Hayashi Yoshimasa (60) will submit his resignation as a member of the House of Councillors (Yamaguchi constituency) as early as Aug. 16, the Mainichi Shimbun learned from a source. Hayashi is a member of the Kishida faction of the Liberal Democratic Party. He has already announced his candidacy for the Yamaguchi District No. 3 seat in the upcoming House of Representatives election. A by-election for the Upper House seat vacated by his resignation is expected to be held on Oct. 24 in accordance with the Public Offices Election Act.
