U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who headed the U.S. delegation to the Closing Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, gave an interview to Yomiuri Shimbun at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Tokyo on Aug. 8. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield lauded the Olympics held amid the COVID-19 pandemic as a “symbol of the Japanese people’s resilience.”

Regarding the Japanese government’s decision to hold the Summer Games, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield acknowledged that “there were various opinions” but praised the Games for “achieving a great success by overcoming adversity.”

There are growing calls to “diplomatically boycott” the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022 by not sending a government delegation. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield criticized the Chinese government’s oppression of the Uyghurs and Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, saying that “China needs to decide by itself how to address these issues.”
