North Korea reacts sharply to U.S.-ROK joint military drills

All networks reported at noon that the U.S. and South Korea began their summertime joint military training today. The networks said North Korea reacted sharply to the drills, with Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, releasing a statement this morning calling them “an unwelcome act of self-destruction for which a dear price should be paid” and saying that they will ”further imperil the situation on the Korean peninsula.” TBS said that a South Korean government source told the network that while North Korea may fire a short-range missile as a provocation, Pyongyang probably will not be overly provocative as communication lines between the South and the North remain active even after the release of the statement.
