The Japanese government will create a new indicator that combines gross domestic product (GDP) and progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The indicator will be a “Green GDP,” which will be calculated differently from conventional GDP. Since Japan’s emissions have decreased in recent years, the new indicator is expected to show a positive growth rate. Amid decarbonization actions worldwide, the indicator will show Japan’s [decarbonization] activities in conjunction with economic growth.
The Cabinet Office will ask the private sector to conduct surveys toward system design in FY2021. (Abridged)
