Nikkei reported on a sharp increase in the number of people under 20 years of age being infected with COVID-19 during the ongoing fifth wave of the virus, noting that the overall number of cases among people under 20 years of age is about three times higher than that during the fourth wave in the spring. Many of these minors apparently contracted the virus at school or home. As the respiratory syncytial virus is also spreading rapidly, with many young children being infected, the daily expressed concern about the mounting strain on pediatric healthcare facilities. Educators are also worried about the planned resumption of classes in September, fearing that more cluster infections will occur at school.
