The two major Okinawa papers reported that Nago municipal assembly member Kishimoto Yohei announced yesterday that he will run in the mayoral election to be held on Jan. 23 on the platform of opposing the FRF construction off Camp Schwab. “I will never endorse the initiative since the voters’ opposition has been made clear in past elections,” said the 48-year-old politician. “The base issue is an environmental issue as well. Massive environmental destruction is unacceptable. I will protect the sea off Henoko.” The dailies noted that incumbent Mayor Toguchi is expected to seek reelection, adding that Kishimoto’s late father Tateo supported the construction project on a conditional basis when he was the mayor of Nago in the early 2000s.
