Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that the Defense Ministry has decided to deploy a missile regiment at a GSDF camp in Uruma, Okinawa, in FY2023 with the goal of deterring China’s aggression at sea. Some 180 personnel will be newly assigned there to operate surface-to-ship missiles. As similar units have already been established on Amami and Miyako Islands and will be deployed to Ishigaki Island as well in FY2022, the latest one will reportedly be positioned to deal with PLA warships that might transit the Miyako Strait during a contingency.
