Tokyo, Aug. 23 (Jiji Press)–Japan welcomes U.S. President Joe Biden’s nomination of Rahm Emanuel, who served as former President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, as ambassador to Japan, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.

The Japanese government understands that Emanuel “has the deep confidence” of Biden, ministry press secretary Tomoyuki Yoshida said in a statement.

Japan “highly appreciates his nomination as reflecting the great importance the Biden administration attaches to the Japan-U.S. alliance,” Yoshida said.
