Tokyo, Aug. 23 (Jiji Press)–Japan and Qatar confirmed cooperation over Afghanistan, where the Taliban have taken control, in their first strategic meeting held in Doha on Monday.

At the meeting, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, now on a Middle East tour, and his Qatari counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, also agreed to enhance the two countries’ cooperation in energy and many other areas.

Mohammed expressed support for Japanese efforts to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region, saying that freedom of navigation and free trade are important also to Qatar.

Japan and Qatar agreed to start bilateral strategic dialogue at a bilateral summit in 2019. Monday’s meeting was the first session under the framework.
