Identity of Russian man determined

MOSCOW / VLADIVOSTOK (Kyodo) – On Aug. 23, the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Japan announced on its Facebook account that the Russian man who was taken into custody by police in Hokkaido and says he “swam over from Kunashiri Island” is V. Nokarde.


The embassy’s Facebook post says that the information is from the Japanese immigration authorities. The embassy reportedly is requesting the Japanese side to allow representatives of Russia’s Consulate General in Sapporo to visit the man.


On Aug. 23, multiple Kunashiri residents told Kyodo that the man had previously told those around him that he planned to leave Russia. The man reportedly was studying Japanese at such places as “Friendship House” (commonly called “Muneo House”).


According to Interfax, the man is around 40 years of age and hails from the Udmurt Republic located in central Russia. He lived in Kunashiri for the past three years or so and went missing on Aug. 17.
