Asahi ran its one-on-one interview with Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry in Tokyo on Tuesday. The paper wrote that Special Envoy Kerry said the G20 nations bear a heavy responsibility to prevent climate change and urged China and other major emitters to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions further. He also reportedly welcomed Japan’s new greenhouse gas emission reduction target of a 46% decline from fiscal 2013 levels by 2030 and a G7 agreement to end new government support for coal power as important and feasible steps, saying they will benefit Japan’s economy in the long run by creating jobs and business opportunities. Kerry reportedly said time is running out to avoid a catastrophic crisis and that greenhouse gas emissions must be significantly reduced by 2030. He reportedly expressed hope that the United States and China will work together toward an ambitious goal.
