On Sept. 1, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) set up a new office tasked with promoting the realization of a decarbonized society. The “international carbon neutral policy office” is staffed with about 30 people and will promote the export of Japan’s decarbonization knowhow in such fields as renewable energy and fuel cell vehicles. As the UK and the European Union (EU) are moving ahead with rule-making on decarbonization businesses and products, the office will act as a point of negotiations at international conferences to prevent Japan from being put at a disadvantage and look to lead international efforts in rule-making.
