The Naha Police Station arrested on the spot a 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corps corporal affiliated with Camp Schwab on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (driving under the influence of alcohol) on Sept. 2. The corporal reportedly denies the charge, saying that he “did not drink alcohol.” Alcohol 1.5 times the reference value was detected on his breath.

The charge is that the suspect was driving a car under the influence of alcohol at around 4:25 a.m. on Sept. 2 on National Road 330 southbound in Yogi, Naha. A patrolling police officer became suspicious when the suspect’s car did not move after the traffic light turned green. The officer reportedly smelled alcohol from the driver’s seat when he checked the car. (Personal name has been redacted.)
