In a Sept. 8 press briefing, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Katsunobu said that the Japanese government “will closely watch the Taliban’s actions” with respect to the report that the Taliban has announced its interim government. Kato revealed that Japanese government representative Uemura Tsukasa, has arrived in Doha, the capital of Qatar, as negotiator. Kato said that Uemura is in contact with members of the Taliban.

The Taliban has a political office in Doha that serves as its point of contact with the outside world. Kato said that the Japanese government is “doing its utmost to help Japanese and local staff [of Japanese organizations] to leave the country, in cooperation with the U.S. and other countries.”
