Tokyo, Sept. 13 (Jiji Press)–Hitachi Ltd. <6501> on Monday launched a new target for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from its entire value chain including production and procurement to virtually zero by fiscal 2050, compared with the previous goal of cutting emissions by 80 pct from the fiscal 2010 level.

To achieve the new target, the Japanese electronics and machinery group will map out emissions reduction plans with some 800 major suppliers, which account for 70 pct of the group’s total procurement value, company officials said.

Hitachi especially plans to achieve carbon neutrality in its production activities by fiscal 2030, in order to encourage its some 30,000 suppliers to promote decarbonization efforts.

The company is eager to “help cities, governments and companies cut carbon, whilst accelerating our own potential as a climate change innovator,” Chief Environmental Officer Alistair Dormer said in a statement.
