On Sept. 14, former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Takaichi Sanae launched her election headquarters for her bid for the LDP presidency. Former National Public Safety Commission Chairperson Furuya Keiji is chair of the headquarters. Takaichi has strong backing from conservative members, including former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. To broaden support beyond conservative members, she plans to map out policies that protect women and people in need.
Thirty-nine LDP members, including many conservatives, attended the ceremony to launch the headquarters. Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Kihara Minoru heads the secretariat, and Lower House member Kiuchi Minoru serves as general secretary. (Abridged)
