The government is poised to appoint Yoshida Manabu, 59, a Cabinet Secretariat councillor and chief of the novel coronavirus response office, to succeed Tarumi Hideki, 61, as Vice-Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare. The appointment will be announced after approval at a Prime Minister’s Office [Kantei] personnel affairs meeting. Yoshida hails from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the predecessor of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). He has been leading the novel coronavirus response office since September last year after serving as director-general of the Child and Family Policy Bureau and the Health Policy Bureau. The government plans to promote Sakoi Masami, 58, who was appointed, effective Sept. 14, a Cabinet Secretariat councillor and deputy chief of the novel coronavirus response office, to succeed Yoshida as office chief.
