Monday’s Okinawa Times wrote from Washington that it has learned from an unnamed U.S. Marine Corps official that General David Berger, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, visited MCAS Futenma and discussed with the commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) the troop reorganization plans associated with Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO). The paper wrote that on Sept. 11 Gen. Berger received a briefing about EABO-related training conducted in such locations as Iejima Auxiliary Airfield, Idesuna Island in Tonaki Village, and Ukibaru Island in Uruma City. The paper alleged that Gen. Berger explained the progress of the reorganization plan to establish at least three Marine littoral regiments in Hawaii, Okinawa, and Guam and stressed that Okinawa’s strategic importance is growing.
