Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that Defense Minister Kishi commented at a press briefing on Tuesday on his ministry’s recent agreement with the United States that Japan will dispose of the water containing PFOS and other chemicals that is currently stored in underground tanks at MCAS Futenma by incinerating it. The papers quoted Kishi as saying that the ministry made the decision because it is necessary for the ministry to take an emergency provisional measure to dispel local citizens’ concerns. Kishi reportedly added that the ministry will take the emergency provisional measure only for the Futenma base and believes it is not necessary at this point to address the situations at other U.S. military facilities.
