No one filed to be a candidate for the President or General Secretary of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) by the Sept. 22 deadline, Sankei learned from an informed source on that day. The terms of both positions end on Oct. 6. In an unprecedented move, Rengo’s election committee has extended the filing deadline to Sept. 30. Rengo President Kozu Rikio, who served three terms totaling six years, has expressed his intent to step down. The selection of his successor is proceeding with difficulty, and it is expected that coordination within Rengo will continue until the filing deadline. It is the first time that the deadline to file as a candidate has been extended since Rengo was launched in 1989.
