Suga calls for food import-export regulations based on scientific evidence

In the early hours of Sept. 24, Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide participated in the UN Food Systems Summit via a prerecorded video message. Suga stated, “Food import and export restrictions should be limited to the minimum necessary. Restrictions should not be arbitrary but should be based on scientific evidence.” Suga emphasized the need to review food import restrictions, in light of the fact that South Korea and China have suspended imports of Fukushima Prefecture’s fisheries and other products since the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.
