Nikkei and Yomiuri wrote that the Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that two U.S. Marine Corps F-35B fighter jets belonging to MCAS Iwakuni will land on and take off from the JS Izumo as a test operation in the Pacific on Oct. 3-7. The papers wrote that this is an operation to make sure that the Izumo’s deck has been properly refurbished to host F-35Bs in preparation for the ASDF’s planned deployment of the aircraft. Nikkei wrote that the Izumo’s conversion to an aircraft carrier is aimed at facilitating Japan’s joint exercises with the U.S. military and strengthening Japan’s defense of the Nansei Islands, where not many runways are available for fighter jets, in view of China’s increasing maritime activities in the East China Sea.
