On Oct. 5, the Okinawa Police Station arrested on the spot a 22-year-old U.S. Air Force senior airman affiliated with Kadena Air Base on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (driving under the influence of alcohol), for driving a standard-sized vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The airman denies part of the charges, saying that he “thought the alcohol had left his system.” Alcohol more than three times the legal limit was detected on his breath.
According to the police station, the suspect’s car turned right on prefectural highway 85 in Kitanakagusuku Village to enter the Aeon Mall Okinawa Rycom at around 7:50 p.m. on Oct. 6, but then crashed into a car which was moving straight. A woman in her 20s, who was in the other car, complained of neck pains and was transported to a hospital. (Personal name has been redacted.)
