TSMC to build plant in Japan in 2022

All national dailies reported on an announcement on Thursday by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) that it plans to build a chip-making factory in Kumamoto prefecture in 2022 and start operations there in 2024. The plant will perhaps be jointly run with Sony Group Corp. and the auto parts maker Denso Corp. The papers wrote that the GOJ is making arrangements to provide financial assistance for the project, in which TSMC is planning to invest around 1 trillion yen ($8.8 billion). Prime Minister Kishida said at a news conference on Thursday that he expects that the new factory will contribute to improving Japan’s economic security by stabilizing the nation’s semiconductor production. Sankei wrote that the new factory will help Japan enhance its economic security and develop its semiconductor industry amid the serious chip supply shortage.
