Police to offer economic security consultation to private sector to prevent technological theft

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and other prefectural police departments will engage in “economic security consulting” services targeting businesses and universities to prevent the outflow of cutting-edge technology to other countries, Nikkei learned on Oct. 9 through the MPD. They will provide the private sector with the latest tactics to prevent theft of technology as well as offer consultation. The program will be launched within the year.

In January, the MPD launched a special unit staffed by about 20 people to help industry groups raise awareness of incidents of theft of technology. It will expand the staff by about 10 next spring and launch an “economic security office.” (Abridged)
