Tokyo, Oct. 20 (Jiji Press)–An estimated 17,700 foreigners visited Japan in September, down 99 pct from September 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Wednesday.

Month on month, the number of foreign visitors dropped about 30 pct, with the Tokyo Paralympics ending in early September following the closing of the Tokyo Olympics.

Of the September total, 4,000 were from China, 2,200 from South Korea and 1,700 from the United States.

For October, the visitor number may be affected by the easing earlier this month of quarantine rules in Japan for vaccinated people from some countries and regions, observers said.
