WASHINGTON – Jiji – On Oct. 20, former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel gave a statement before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as part of his hearing related to his nomination to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to Japan. At one point in the hearing, Republican Senator William Hagerty, the previous U.S. Ambassador to Japan, requested Emanuel to lobby the Japanese side to free former Nissan Motor director Greg Kelly.
Kelly has been accused of violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act for plotting to conceal part of then-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn’s compensation. Since Kelly’s arrest in 2018, Sen. Hagerty has stressed that Kelly has been detained too long. Hagerty, who [like Kelly] hails from Tennessee, remarked, “Japan has an outdated judicial system. A Tennessee citizen is suffering from unfair and barbaric treatment.”
