On Oct. 20, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held a meeting to discuss the introduction of renewable energy and compiled measures to be taken going forward. Measures included the introduction of 10 million kW of offshore wind power by 2030. Offshore wind power is expected to be a trump card in turning renewables into a main power source for Japan. METI called for the government to be involved from the early stages of development, such as preliminary surveys, and to efficiently move forward with facility construction.

The government will make a cabinet decision on the Basic Energy Plan within the month. METI aims to have renewables make up 36-38% of Japan’s energy mix in FY2030, which is double the 18% in FY2019.
