On Dec. 21, the Japan Coast Guard’s 11th Regional Headquarters (Naha) announced that at around 1:15 p.m. on that same day, two China Coast Guard ships left Japan’s territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands (Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture) and entered Japan’s contiguous zone. The Chinese ships had intruded into Japanese waters on Dec. 20 and tried to approach a Japanese fishing boat operating there. It was the second consecutive day that Chinese ships were in Japanese waters around the Senkakus and the 40th day this year. The JCG ships were dispatched to the area to urge the Chinese vessels to leave Japan’s territorial waters.
