The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) announced on Oct. 22 that it will allocate a total of 36.54 billion yen in FY2021 military base subsidies and adjustment subsidies to 296 municipalities in 45 prefectures and Tokyo wards that host facilities of the U.S. military or the Self-Defense Forces (SDF). The subsidies will be issued by year-end. A total of 7.26 billion yen will be issued to 24 municipalities in Okinawa.
The breakdown of the subsidies is as follows: 29.14 billion yen for base subsidies, 7.4 billion yen for adjustment subsidies. Iwakuni City (Yamaguchi Prefecture), which hosts Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, will receive 2.52 billion yen, the largest amount. MCAS Iwakuni is used by both the U.S. military and the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF). Yokosuka City (Kanagawa Prefecture) and Misawa City (Aomori Prefecture) will receive the second and third highest amounts, at 2.3 billion and 2.13 billion yen, respectively. In Okinawa Prefecture, Okinawa City will receive 1.28 billion yen, while Kadena Town will receive 1.01 billion yen.
