U.S. Secretary of Navy warns against China, Russia

Tokyo, Oct. 25 (Jiji Press)–Visiting U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro warned against China and Russia on Monday over their naval forces’ recent military drills conducted in waters around Japan.

In a telephone conference with Jiji Press and other media outlets, Del Toro said, “I think it’s necessary to certainly deter them from bullying other countries and being aggressors in any possible way.”

He noted that China and Russia have attempted in recent years to pose threats to other countries in a way that violates international order based on rules.

“Our presence is a very important aspect to deterrence,” Del Toro stressed, stressing the need for the United States to strengthen its alliances with countries including Japan, Australia and the Philippines.

On Monday, Del Toro, who took office in August, paid a courtesy call on Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi.
