Mayor lodges protest with defense ministry bureau over U.S. military helicopter landing

Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that the mayor of Aguni Village delivered a letter of protest and opinion paper to the Defense Ministry’s Okinawa defense bureau on Thursday over the emergency landing made by a Futenma-based CH-53E helicopter on Aguni Island on Oct. 20. The mayor demanded that the cause of the incident be determined and that such incidents be prevented from occurring in the future. The defense bureau chief told the local leader that he has called on the U.S. military to thoroughly implement aircraft maintenance and safety measures. The Aguni assembly chief submitted a similar opinion paper.
