MOSCOW – On Oct. 29, the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet said it had conducted military exercises in the waters of the Peter the Great Bay. Russia insists this northwestern part of the Sea of Japan is its “territorial waters.” Moscow is believed to have conducted the exercises out of wariness regarding the freedom of navigation operations carried out by the U.S. Navy near the waters in November last year. The exercises included the training of an antisubmarine patrol helicopter carrier, electronic warfare to deal with attacks, and artillery bombardments. The state-of-the-art corvette Aldar Tsydenzhapov, which played a major role in the exercises, participated in the joint maritime patrol conducted by the Chinese and Russian militaries on Oct. 17-23.
