Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times wrote that Okinawa Governor Tamaki, who is backed by the All Okinawa anti-Futenma relocation group, spoke to the press on Monday about All Okinawa’s defeat in two of the four single-seat constituencies in Okinawa, including the No. 3 district where Henoko is located, in the Lower House election on Sunday. The governor said he takes the election results seriously but will maintain his opposition to the construction of a “new base” at Henoko because he believes that many people in Okinawa remain opposed to the Henoko plan. He attributed the All Okinawa candidates’ defeat to the likelihood that voters in the No. 3 district are more interested in Okinawa’s post-pandemic economic recovery than base issues.
