On Oct. 29, the Self-Defense Forces Okinawa Provincial Cooperation Office held a press briefing at the Air Self-Defense Force Naha Base on the current status of ASDF scrambles. Members of the press were briefed on the base’s scrambling operations against Chinese military and other aircraft and were shown the base’s rescue helicopters.
According to the Joint Staff Office, the Southwestern Air Defense Force, which is headquartered at the Naha Base, conducted 269 scrambles during the half-year period from April through September this year. This figure represents two-thirds of the total number of ASDF scrambles. “This unit is on high alert,” stressed the person in charge of the briefing.
