NHK reported at noon that the GOJ’s subcommittee on the new coronavirus held a meeting today, during which it proposed revising the existing criteria for assessing the COVID-19 infection situation by focusing more on healthcare capacity given the progress in the vaccination rollout and the development of treatment drugs. According to the network, the subcommittee proposed classifying the infection situation in each prefecture according to five levels, from Level 0, where there are no new cases of COVID-19, to Level 4, where medical institutions are no longer able to deal with all the COVID-19 patients even if they reduce their general medical services. The network added that the subcommittee believes the government should continue to assess the current situation as Level 1, which signifies that the healthcare system is able to respond to COVID-19 in a stable manner.
