Nikkei wrote that the GOJ will begin this month discussions with the ruling parties on revisions to Japan’s National Security Strategy, which presents medium- to long-term guidelines for the nation’s defense and foreign policies. This will be the first update since the strategy was compiled in 2013, and the GOJ is planning to finalize it by the end of 2022. The paper wrote that the discussions will include talks on strengthening of the U.S.-Japan alliance and that the GOJ will launch them ahead of Prime Minister Kishida’s envisaged visit to the United States. The paper also wrote that the GOJ and the ruling parties will discuss whether to include economic security and the possibility of Japan possessing the ability to attack enemy bases in the revisions, noting that although the Komeito party recognizes the importance of economic security, it is hesitant to mention the ability to attack enemy bases.
